John Wesley Stokes, Jr., age 72 years, passed away on Sunday, August 27, 2017 at his home in Cleveland, Oklahoma.
John was born on August 8, 1945 in Hominy, Oklahoma to John Wesley, Sr. and Eva Mae (Grier) Stokes. He married Ruby Thornhill on April 8, 1968 in Hominy and served in the US Army during 1962-1965 in Vietnam. John worked in the oilfield and was a lifelong Hominy and Cleveland resident.
John is survived by: his wife, Ruby of the home; 3 children: Tonya Dahlke and her husband, Billy, of Mannford, OK, John Wesley Stokes, III and his wife, Toni, of Cleveland, OK, and Melinda Lemmons of Cleveland, OK; 14 grandchildren: Tiffany, Adam, Jacob, John Wesley Stokes, IV, Dakota, Matthew, Dylan, Shelby, Mia, Cade, Stephanie, Jaclyn, Ryan and Travis; 2 great-grandchildren: Alexander and Quitin, 1 sister: Rosetta Kester of Cleveland, OK; 2 brothers: Frank Stokes of Hominy, OK and Amos Stokes of Cleveland, OK.
John is preceded in death by: his parents; his son, Matthew Leon Stokes; 2 sisters: Jeanetta Standridge and Mary Woods; 1 brother: Tommy Stokes; and his great-granddaughter, Natalie.
The funeral service will be held graveside at 1:00 PM, Wednesday, August 30, 2017 at the A. J. Powell Memorial Cemetery in Hominy with Pastor Waylon Stokes officiating. Pallbearers will be: Billy Dahlke, Waylon Stokes, Justin Smith, Adam Burgess, John Wesley Stokes, III and Willie Sissom. Honorary Pallbearers will be John's grandsons: Travis, Ryan and Jacob. Military Honors will be provided by the VFW 5th District Rifle Squad. Burial will follow services.
