Stephen Anthony Mitts

Me-ti-an-ka Stephen Anthony Mitts of the Golden Eagle Clan, known to his friends and family as Sam, passed from this life on May 15, 2022, at the age of 66 at his daughter's home in Cleveland, Oklahoma.



On December 23, 1955, Sam was born in Tulsa, the son of Wilson and Marjelen Olita (Whitehorn) Mitts. Sam grew up in the Middle Enterprise area of Osage County, where he began his education and later transferred to Hominy, where he graduated with the Class of 1974. Sam was very active in sports and, in 1973, was a member of the State Championship Football Team. Following high school, Sam attended and graduated from Tulsa Welding School. Sam was a member of the Local 798 Pipeliners Union for over 40 years. During his time working with the 798, he traveled throughout North America. In 2014, Sam retired from the Local 798. On April 21, 1990, Sam was united in marriage to Paula Barber, and to that union, there is one daughter Kinsey. November 13, 2019, Sam was united in marriage to Dorothy Dee Dunford in Cleveland, Oklahoma.



Hunting, fishing, and golfing were some of Sam's favorite things to do. Watching Gunsmoke was also one of the things he enjoyed doing. He always liked going to Hot Springs to the races and festivities. Sam was a very proud supporter of the University of Oklahoma and the Hominy Bucks. Sam always enjoyed and adored being with his grandkids; they were the light of his day. Sam was able to give the younger two grandchildren their Osage name. Sam enjoyed going to and participating in the Indian dances and was a member of the Hominy committee for several years.





Survivors are his wife Dorothy of the home; daughter Kinsey Gillum and her husband Brandon of Cleveland, Oklahoma; two sisters April Mitts of Hominy, Oklahoma and her son Seth Cale; Tina Cox and her husband Bob of Hominy, Oklahoma; four grandchildren, Kiersten, Maleah, Brooklyn, and Zayden Ray and a host of other relatives and friends. Sam was preceded in death by his parents Wilson and Olita Mitts, brother Wilson "Cowboy" Mitts, and an infant brother.



Visitation will be held at the residence of April Mitts in Hominy, Oklahoma. Services will begin at 8:00 am, Thursday, May 19, 2022, at the residence with church services to follow at 10:00 am at the Friends Church in Hominy, Oklahoma. Burial will follow in the A.J. Powell Memorial Cemetery in Hominy, Oklahoma. Services are under the direction of Powell Funeral Home. Visit a online memorial for Sam at www.powellfuneralservice.com.
