Rudolph (Rudy) Conley Rogers Obituary Memorial Military Graveside Service by VFW 5th District Honor Team for Rudolph (Rudy) Conley Rogers, 91 of Hominy, Oklahoma was held Wednesday, February 12, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at A.J. Powell Cemetery in Hominy. Interment was under the direction of Powell Funeral Home. Rudy passed away on Thursday, February 6, 2014 in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. He was born July 16, 1922 in Wichita, Kansas to Melvin and Sylvia (Holt) Rogers. Rudy's mother died when he was four and he was raised by his aunt and grandparents. He attended Hominy Schools but interrupted his schooling to join the Army National Guard in Hominy, in March of 1940. During his time in the Army Rudy got to see the world, but not the way most would have wanted to. Rudy was stationed at Camp Barkley, Texas when he heard that Pearl Harbor had been bombed. From there he went to Ford Devins, Mass., for more training, then to Pine Camp, New York, and then on to Camp Pickett, VA, he eventually ended up on the USS Calvert. Rudy missed the fighting in Africa, but fought in both France and Italy. He was privileged to meet both General George Patton and President Dwight Eisenhower. Rudy lost several good friends during those fights, he himself receiving two Purple Hearts. On November 10, 1943 in Venefro Rudy was hit by shrapnel and was sent to Naples where he spent 30 days before being sent back to North Africa for about a month. Even then he went back to active duty catching up with his troop in Anzio. One of Rudy's jobs was to set the elevation and range of a 105 millimeter howitzer gun. He eventually became Gun Chief overseeing everything. Rudy was Honorable Discharged from the Army of the United States on November 21, 1945, at the McCloskey General Hospital in Temple, Texas. He was a Private First Class of Battery A, 171st Field Artillery Battalion, 45th Division. During his time in the Army Rudy also received a Bronze Star and a Silver Star. Upon his return to Hominy after his military service Rudy received his diploma in 1947 from Hominy High School. He is survived by his brother: Jack Rogers and wife Marion of Tulsa and numerous nephews, nieces and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents. www.powellfuneralservice.com
