Pearl B Long

Pearl Bowman Long was 98 years old when she passed away on February 23, 2015 in Norman, OK. For the last 1 ½ years she was in a nursing home in Norman near her daughter, Rose. Pearl was born on November 24, 1916 in Perkins, OK the 2nd child of Fannie and James Bowman. The family moved to Pawnee and that is where Pearl attended school. When she was 16 she met Jim Long, who was 14 at the time. After a 7 year friendship and then courtship, they married on 89’ers day in April 1940 at Guthrie, OK. In July 1942, their first child was born, James “Jimmy” Long. When Jim was drafted in the Navy in World War II, Pearl and Jimmy lived in a downtown Pawnee apartment awaiting his return. When Jim returned they purchased a property on Ash Street, built a small house, and eventually added an addition to accommodate the growing family. When Jimmy and Marie were small children the family moved to Pryor for Jim to work. They stayed there a short period of time then returned to their home in Pawnee. In 1962 they moved to Enid where they lived for 2 years, after which they again returned to live in the home they loved in Pawnee. Pearl and Jim had 6 children: Jimmy, Marie, Fred, Rose, Walter, and Palma. Pearl was a homemaker most of the time, and also enjoyed working part-time at the downtown Buffalo Theater and Lakeside Drive-In Theater. The family always had a garden and Pearl enjoyed cooking and canning what they grew. She loved to sew but rarely used a bought pattern. Her children knew her to be a great cook and loving mother. Pearl is survived by her daughter, Rose and husband Craig Hunter of Norman, and son Walter and wife Karen of Lawrence, Kansas. Also, 13 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, sisters-Iva Karraker, Nora Hatfield, Thelma Harshbarger, and many nieces and nephews.
