Ora Mae Marcum, 84 years, of Hominy, Oklahoma passed away on Saturday, January 30, 2016 at Saint Francis Hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She has lived in Hominy since 1954.
Ora Mae was born in Scotts Hill, Tennessee at 11:00 AM on November 14, 1931 to Herbert Manley and Norma Lee (Holland) Grissom. She was named after both of her grandmothers; Ora Della Jane Tucker and Minnie Mae Holland.
Ora Mae was a gifted cook who may have used recipes but never needed one. She came by her cooking ability naturally because her grandmother, Minnie, lived with them while she was growing up. While her mother was at work, Ora Mae spent lots of hours in the kitchen with Mama Minnie. She started by helping with the desserts and by the time she was 12, was cooking entire meals. She also loved to crochet and knit and even took on crochet projects in the last two years that benefit a Tulsa charity called LIFE Senior Services. Ora Mae was an avid reader and enjoyed puzzles of all types.
Ora Mae met Derrell Petty while he was working with her father on a pipeline and on February 20, 1952 they were married in Glasgow, Kentucky. It was a life of moving here and there as they followed the pipeline, but eventually they settled down in Hominy and started a family. They had three children: Duane, Bryan, and Denise. Ora Mae was an exceptional seamstress making many of the clothes for her kids, proms, recitals, twirling uniforms, and pretty much anything else that someone needed. She became a widow too soon as Derrell passed away at the young age of 48.
Ora Mae worked at the Hominy City Hospital and around 1975, she and Bobbie Metzger opened an antique store called The Curiosity Shop on Main Street in Hominy. She continued to raise her children as a single mother until 1976 when she married W. T. "Ted" Marcum. Ted had two sons, Eddie and his wife Janet and Ted Jr. and his wife Mary. Everyone came together to form an amazing new blended family.
Ora Mae and Ted operated a cattle business for many years until the physical demands became too difficult. Over the years, one thing that never changed, were the family gatherings in Hominy around a large dining table with bountiful meals prepared by Ora Mae. She has always been the central point of contact for the entire family. Ora Mae and Ted were married for 34 years until he passed away on August 2, 2010.
Ora Mae is survived by: 5 children: Duane Petty and his fiancé Tracy Tygart of Hominy, OK, Bryan Petty of Benbrook, TX, Denise Redmond and her husband, John of Tulsa, OK, Eddie Marcum and his wife, Jane of Kerrville, TX and Ted Marcum and his wife, Mary of Ft. Gibson, OK.; 6 grandchildren: Beau, Jordan, Katy, Emma and Abby; 2 great-grandchildren: Caroline and Arwen; her sister-in-law, Ruth Grissom of Atoka, TN; her nieces & nephews: Randy Tucker, Rhonda Tucker and Janet Rogoz.
Ora Mae is preceded in death by: her parents, her husbands; Derrell and Ted, and her brother, Herbert Lee Grissom.
The funeral service was held at 1:00 PM, Wednesday, February 3, 2016 at the First United Methodist Church in Hominy, Oklahoma with the Reverend David Mingus officiating and Brad Butler speaking. Pallbearers were: Beau Marcum, Jordan Marcum, John Tucker, John Redmond, Brad Butler, Chuck Spurgeon, Charles Shaw, and CB Rowan. Vocalist was Gary Jennings with the musical selection of "When I Get Where I'm Going". Burial followed the services at the A. J. Powell Memorial Cemetery in Hominy.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to LIFE Senior Services in her honor at lifeseniorservices.org.
