Opal Mae Sykes

Opal Mae Sykes Obituary Opal Mae Sykes passed from this life at the age of 95 years old at her home in Hominy, Oklahoma October 17, 2014 surrounded by loved ones. Opal was born May 15, 1919 in Iowa Park, Texas, the ninth child of George and Lizzie Robertson. She was raised in Fulton, Missouri attending West Public School. Opal was known to have worked hard most all her life whether picking cotton, milking cows at a dairy, or homemaking and raising her nine children. Opal was no stranger to heartbreak, and at a tender age of toddlerhood while still in diapers, her mother became ill and died necessitating an adoption to a couple John and Clara Audry of Missouri. She endured still in her younger and aged years the losses and untimely deaths of husbands and children. 1940's brought Opal to Hominy, Oklahoma and united her with Ruben Sykes in marriage in 1951. In the 1980's Opal was joyously reunited with surviving siblings Mutt and Jack Robertson who told of her past and celebrated they had finally found her. Opal was often found in the kitchen of her little house on North Reagan Street cooking. She would always ask any guest or especially grandchild if they were hungry. Many were fed a bowl of goulash. Of her younger days, it was said she could fry chicken like no one else! Opal loved best to get a smile out of you. A trait she easily passed on to her children. Some favorite times would be to ask her about the old days and let her tell about times when people rode in horse team and wagons. It's no wonder she loved westerns so much. Some days you would find her on her back porch listening and singing to Marty Robbins. Opal is survived by son: Kenneth Hull and wife Polly of Hominy, Oklahoma, daughters: Donna Blackburn of Osage, Oklahoma, and Cheryl Stiles of Hominy, Oklahoma. And best friend, Pauline Minnerup as well as a legacy of 25 grandchildren, numerous great and great-great grandchildren as well. Opal was preceded in death by her parents, her spouse: Ruben Sykes, six children: Eugene Elmer Hull, William Andrew Hull, Nellie Louise Boyt, Marvin Ruben Sykes, Vernie Mae Mercer, and Daniel Leroy Hull. Funeral Services were Monday, October 20, 2014 at the Powell Funeral Home Chapel, at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Jimmy Hunt officiating. Music selections were "In the Arms of An Angel", "Go Rest High on That Mountain" and "I Won't Let Go". Pall Bearers were Johnny Hull, Mike Mercer, W.C. Hunt, Tony Sykes, Bill Stiles, Shawn Sykes and Honorary Pall Bearers Jerry Stokes, Stanley Hull and Kevin Hull. Interment was in the A. J. Powell Memorial Cemetery. Arrangements were made under the direction of Powell Funeral Home, Hominy, Oklahoma. Online memorials may be left at www.powellfuneralservice.com.
