TRIBUTE TO LARRY

“I want to live in a smaller community where I can be a part of the community, get to know the people, and help them”. Larry Eulert 1989

Larry Eulert, age 73, of Hominy, OK passed away to Heaven Wednesday afternoon, July 22, 2020 in Tulsa, OK.

Larry was born October 5, 1946 in Tulsa to Luther Emil Eulert and Loraine Virginia Cole Eulert.  He was a member of the First Lutheran Church of Tulsa and played French Horn in the church orchestra during the annual Christmas performances of Handel’s “The Messiah”.  He was a member of the first class of Memorial High School, Tulsa, OK in 1964.  Larry attended Northeastern State College, Tahlequah, OK perusing a Bachelor of Science in Biology and Chemistry, preparing to work in the field of marine biology.  He joined the U.S. Army in 1966 where he served in Germany and in the 196th Light Infantry Brigade, in Vietnam.  He received the Good Conduct Medal for exemplary behavior and was honorably discharged in 1972.
Upon reinterring civilian life, he returned to Tulsa, where he learned and improved his skills within the printing trade as an engraving press operator.  He individually hand-pressed announcements and invitations for many including his and Clara’s wedding invitations.

Eulert was introduced to banking in 1973 as a drive-in teller for Southeastern State Bank, Tulsa.  Eulert was responsible for bank operations, personnel and financial analysis.  He was promoted four times during the bank’s history, achieving Vice President in 1979-1989.   The Southeastern State Bank, Tulsa, was renamed Bank of Tulsa.  During his tenure with Bank of Tulsa he met and hired Clara Nell Brantley in the summer of 1975.  Larry and Clara were married 1 year and 2 days, later on June 12, 1976 and were married over 44 year at the time of his passing.  The Eulerts were blessed with the joy of their lives, daughter Tara in 1981.

Larry’s greatest career opportunity to date resulted after the February 14, 1989 decision by the banks consulting efficiency experts.  When Eulert and several middle management staff were deemed, “Non-essential”, Larry formed the unofficial but very effective “Non-Essential Bank of Tulsa Employees group”.  The group met for dinner and supported each other through outplacement efforts directed by Larry. Once every member gained new employment the groups meetings were less frequent.  In 2020, members of the group still kept in touch with the Eulerts.  A glass will be raised in Larry’s honor at the group’s next opportunity.

Larry and the family moved to Hominy in 1990. Larry and Clara celebrated 30 years in Hominy.  Larry Eulert fulfilled his dream to live in a smaller community where he could participate in the community, get to know the people and help them.  Larry was happy living in Hominy and never wanted to leave.

Larry Eulert was a banker for more than 45 years; he was promoted to the President of First National Bank in Hominy in 1997.  The bank celebrated its 100 th anniversary before Larry retired from banking in 2013.  Larry also served the city government of Hominy for more than a quarter-century. He held a seat on the Hominy City Council for 20 years, was city manager for a year and five months, and was municipal treasurer for three years, 10 months. He continued as municipal treasurer until his passing.  While in Hominy he was active in the Chamber of Commerce and President for one year.  The First National Bank in Hominy contributed to many local organizations and Larry and his wife attended their events, supported their efforts and were well acquainted with many of the members.   Hominy supported Eulert as well.  Larry said of his military service in Vietnam, “the Hominy Veteran’s Day program held annually at the Hominy High School was the 1st time my military service was ever positively acknowledged”.

In October 2017 he served as the interim city manager for Pawhuska.  Eulert also served other rural communities, providing consulting services to the city of Nowata and town of Copan.

Eulert ever the “Dad”, loved, played with and taught Tara many things.  Tara’s first experience in banking followed her inquiry for a new stereo.  Eulert, enjoying the “teaching moment”, loaned her the money but not before a completed simple interest installment loan application was signed and submitted to the “First National Bank of Dad”.  Terms of the loan were discussed, the consequence for non-payment was repossession.  All parties agreed to the terms, proceeds of the loan were advanced and Tara was never late with her payments and the loan was paid off as agreed.  Family vacation and work schedules required unique planning at times. On more than one occasion, Dad and daughter were driver and navigator on long distance Honda Goldwing motorcycle trips, meeting Clara in Jackson Hole, Wyoming for one of the family’s vacation trips.  Dad was the hobbyist jeweler who made her prom jewelry from alexandrite.   Eulert was such a proud OU Dad when Tara graduated with a BSN, RN.

Eulert was a man of faith.  His worship of the Lord was outside the church, serving the Lord by helping and serving others.  Larry was a driver.  Touring locally and nationwide he and the love of his life, Clara enjoyed every season and all they had to offer.  He was an adventurer.  Traveling the US and the world alone and then with, Clara.  When Tara was old enough the adventures continued and were enriched by her.  Most recently Eulert’s life was blessed by the marriage of Tara to James Cain his extraordinary and talented son-in-law.  More travels, and more adventures continued and included the grandchildren and friends. The US and the world offered so many experiences and beautiful places to see, Eulert’s bucket list was endless. He shared the experiences with his family and friends.   He was also a hunter of African big game, donating all the day’s harvest to the local people of Namibia, Africa.  He was a golfer, a trusted friend, a loyal and loving husband and a great Dad.  He became a very proud “Poppy” to “the Grands”, Leila age 11 and Aiden age 6.  Larry loved being their grandpa and could hardly wait until he could go and play with them again.

God knew Larry’s time was approaching.  He readied Larry for his last adventure into eternal life on July 21st.  On July 22, 2020 at 15:20 God took Larry by his right hand and ascended into Heaven where Larry lives eternally.  We will see him again when it is our time.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Luther and Loraine Eulert, sister Linda and brother-in-law Robert Grout and niece, Kendra Grout Cassar.

Larry is survived by his wife, Clara, daughter Tara Cain and husband James, grandchildren Leila and Aiden, sister Cathy Fritz and husband David Novak, niece Christine Fritz and son Alex Fritz, niece Kris Lamberty and husband Jimmy, sister-in-law Carole Lee and husband Mike, niece Alexandra and husband P J Corbitt and nephew Austin Lee and Ashley Francis.
