Gladys Juanita Adams

Gladys Juanita Adams was born on September 17, 1917 in rural Bryan County near Wade, Oklahoma. She was the daughter of Samuel and Zora Belle (Bates) French. Juanita was raised on a farm in Bryan County where she assisted in the care of her siblings an working on the family farm picking cotton, raising chickens, hogs and cattle. After completion of her education she also worked at a local snack bar in Durant as a car hop.

Juanita was united in marriage to G. A. Adams on January 4, 1941. The couple made their initial home in Bryan County and them relocated to California in 1943 where both G. A. and Juanita accepted positions working in the shipyards during the war effort. Juanita also augmented their income working as a nurse’s aide.

Juanita and G. A. returned to Oklahoma and estabished their home in Durant. They later moved frequently over the next few years to Oregon, Washington, Nevada and Florida. In 1972 the couple returned to Oklahoma for good moving to Hominy where they have continued to reside. Grover and Juanita loved returing to Las vegas to visit where they once lived and spending time on vacations in South Dakota.

While residing in Hominy, Juanita worked as a nurse’s aide assisting many Hominy area residents. She also spend countless hours as a volunteer at the Hominy Nursing Home. She was know for walking everywhere all around Hominy as she did not drive. She could often be seen walking to the store or to church. She was an excellent cook and was known for her outstanding fried chicken, fry bread and beans. Additionally, she loved to garden, both flower and vegetable and to fish.

She enjoyed gospel and country western music; especially music for the Bob Wills era. Her favorite television program was Everybody Loves Raymond and when it wasn’t on her television would probably be tuned to the Weather Channel. She loved playing bingo and pecking around at the casino. Juanita was a longtime and faithful member of the First Baptist Church in Hominy.

She passed from this life on Saturday, March 28, 2015 at her home in Hominy at the age of ninety-seven. She was preceded in death by her husband, G. A. Adams on January 24, 2008; son, Danny Adams in 1963; parents, Samuel and Zora Belle French; three brothers, Bill French, Cotton French and Roy French and two sisters, Maydine Carter and Doris Denning.

Juanita is surivived by her daughter, Esther Adams of Hominy, Oklahoma; five grandchildren, Ronnie, Julie, Myron, Jolene and John; six great-grandchildren, Bryce, Kenady, Erin, Adam, Jack and Cayden; a sister, Lorene Daniels of Hughes Springs, Texas; numerous nieces, nephews and other friends and relatives that will mourn her passing.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, March 30, 2015 at the First Baptist Church in Hominy with Gerry Lay officiating. Interment will be at 3:30 p.m., Monday, at the Highland Cemetery in Durant, Oklahoma. Friends may share a memory with the family at the funeral home or online at www.chapman-black.com.
