Gayle Funkhouser

Doris Gayle Funkhouser passed from Earth to Heaven Monday, March 17, 2014, at Southern Oaks Care Center in Pawnee, Oklahoma, at the age of 95 years, 4 months, and 20 days. A lifetime resident of Skedee, she was born on the home place to her parents, Lee and EmmaZell Peckenpaugh on October 25, 1918. At the age of 12, she asked Jesus to ber her Savior, trusting His shed blood to wash her sins away. She often rode with her grandpa in a one-horse buggy to sell cream, and she walked a half-mile to meet a covered wagon which took her to school. She remembered her little brothers funeral in their yard and her mother singing The Little Rosewood Casket. When she was eight years old, her parents took her to the dedication of the Skedee Statue. She remembered the big celebration with campgrounds and the Indians in their full headdress.

Graduating from Skedee High School in 1936, she began working at Skedees General Store, buying cream and eggs and taking them to the train depot for shipping. For children coming home from school, she would cut bologna with crackers for a dime, and a nickel would purchase a piece of candy or fruit. While in high school, she and a friend went to the School Board, getting girls basketball reinstated for their senior year, playing 3 division, which most have not ever heard of.

On Christmas Day 1938, she married RB Funkhouser. They made their home on the farm for seventy plus years.

She was a woman of great faith. Reading and memorizing Gods word was her stay. Her whispered songs of Jesus brought comfort to all who came near. Known for her unselfishness, she never ceased in her 95 years to think of others before herself. She was a persona of the Proverb 31 women, and her children do rise up and call her blessed.

Her descendants will never forget her instruction of I lived through the dust bowl and the depression; it taught me to use it upwear it outmake it door do without
